These two slabs are one of the best 80s compilations of UK 60’s underground, R&B, Freakbeat and Psych [next to ‘Chocolate Soup For Diabetics’, The Perfumed Garden and ‘Rubble’ comps]. Issued in ’89 LPs by AIP Records [known for ‘Highs in the mid 60’s’, ‘Pebbles’] as repacked versions of ‘Electric Sugarcube Flashbacks’ vols 1&2 from ’83, now with better genre sellection. Vol.3 is R&B/Freakbeat oriented collection featuring groups as The Wheels, Southern Sound, Brand, Chicago Line, Mickey Finn, Nix Nomads, The Beat Merchants, The Smoke… while Volume 4 contains [now a classic] Psych/Freakbeat of The Pandamonium, The Factory, Herbal Mixture, Skip Bifferty, Les Fleur De Lys, The French Revolution, Big Boy Pete… Many of these groups became ‘famous’ after such comps and had their own particular reissues.
For me this was a real cool entrance into fantastic world of British 60’s underground rock some 25 years ago. Even thought they omited many seminal UK freakbeat groups as The Eyes, The Sorrows, Action, John’s Children, The Birds, The Attack, and after so many years and zillions of simmilar comps, these two are still my favs [especially vol.4]. Vol.3 is a Vinyl rip while Vol.4 has enhanced sound from best possible sources. Try A Little Sunshine!
On the wave of freakbeat craze at Surfadelic, here comes new comp.series of some obscure & rare UK 60’s mod/beat. Some of the songs could be heard on other collections but some are available only here. Well, everything seems nice at first glance, the package is cool, the sound is great but the problem is that many of the tunes are 2nd class, so after so many 60’s freakbeat comps this is kinda like ”scrap the bottom of the barrel”. Anyways, there are enough fine stuff for you ”hardcore freakbeat fans” as every volume has 20 trax with the crisp clear sound and lotsa fuzz. Come on and enjoy your wyld 60’s fantasy dream, Dig !!!
[A message for sunnyboy66 from youtube: Hey dude, don’t put it immediately on YT, let it live for a while ok ?!?]
The Deejays were London beat group very popular in Sweden (thanks to Roland Ferneborg manager of The Spotnicks) where they recorded most of their singles and two LPs for Polydor and Hep House records from 1963-68. They played many R&B/Beat covers as I’m A Hog For You Baby, Dimples, Farmer John, I Just Can’t Go To Sleep, Long Tall Shorty, I Can Tell, In The Midnight Hour, Tobacco Road, Gloria, Summertime Blues… but also some fine originals as raw freakbeat tunes Blackeyed Woman, You Must Be Joking, Not That Girl, What’ Cha Tryin’ To Do, Strong Love, Time And Time Again, Incrowd Hangout or cool psychedelics like flexi single Inside My Mind or Stripped Dreams from their ’67 LP ”Haze”
I’m in the mood for some Freak-Beat lately, so I made a collection of this UK group’s 60’s recordings, singles & lp trax, trying to avoid their pop flavored stuff in favor of their more hard-edge R&B/Beat tunes. I’ve made a Surfadelic choice of material so it must be rockin’n’rollin’ alright! Dig !!!
Auckland’s 60’s garage/pop band very popular in Australia and New Zealand where they scored several nationally charting singles. They were heavily influenced by ‘British Invasion’ groups as Small Faces, The Who, Yardbirds, Animals, Creation… They issued an album [unfortunately not so hot] ”A Study In Black” in ’67 and a bunch of singles.
Larry’s Rebels were somethin’ like ‘NZ Paul Revere and the Raiders’ [even covered their song ”Mo’reen”], merging pop tunes with ‘hard edge’ freakbeat/garage sound. Most of their stuff are covers but pretty cool as energetic renditions of ”Painter Man” [The Creation], ”What’cha Gonna Do About It” [Small Faces], ”I’ll Make You Happy” [The Easybeats], ”Inside Looking Out” [The Animals], ”It’s Not True” [The Who], great Yardbirds influenced cover of J.Burnette ”Train kept a rollin’” called ”Flying Scotsman” and hit single ”I Feel Good” [Allen Toussaint/Benny Spellman]. Also there are some fine originals as mod mover ”Shakin’ Up Some Soul”, freakbeat groovers ”Coloured Flowers” and ”Passing You By” [as The Rebels, without Larry].
This here is a vinyl rip of fine Australian ’83 collection of their singles from 1965-1969. Everything you ever need from Larry’s Rebels. Feel Good… Dig !!!

Following my previous post, here’s a group you can hear on vol.2 of ”Hen’s Theet” comp. This Mod Freakbeat combo was formed in 1965, Hatfield UK, out of The Juniors and Hi-Numbers their previous incarnations [later on they evolved in well known pop/psych band The Gods]. They issued only one 7” That Driving Beat / Walkin’ Walkin’ Walkin’ on Mercury in ’66, so majority of the stuff in this collection are unissued. Here you got some cool covers of R&B classics as Leaving Here, Lucille or Fortune Teller, done in Fav Sons style. In their heydays they shared stage with The Birds, The Artwoods and The Who, well… you got the picture. First I Look At The Purse :-)) Check ’em out, Gid !!!
Complete story of The Favourite Sons you can read here
Interesting 90’s comp. series of some obscure UK 60’s groups singles and acetates. Styles ranged from beat, mod to garage frekbeat and psych. If you like comps as The Perfumed Garden, Rubble, Purple Heart Surgery, Electric Sugarcube Flashbacks and such, than this is fer ya. Say… Dig!!!
Achtung Baby! This here is a real cool 3cd edition of the ‘Prae-Kraut Pandaemonium’ lp’s compilation of mostly German 60’s garage/beat/psych groups [there are few UK, Swiss, Austrian and Sweden bands], and probably some of you are already familiar with the stuff but WTF. I can’t always come with somethin’ nobody knows 🙂 So here’s a deal… You better dig alright!
Three vols of mostly Belgian & French 60’s mod/freakbeat/exotica & trash extravaganza.
